What's different about a Harley-Davidson
Air-cooled 45-degree V-twins run hotter and vibrate more by design than a Japanese four, which changes what counts as normal. Belt final drive replaces chain on most models, so chain-specific checks do not apply — belt tension and debris damage do. Many Harleys also carry substantial aftermarket modification, which is worth establishing before diagnosing.
Worth checking first
- Heat soak in traffic being read as overheating — air-cooled twins genuinely run hot.
- Belt drive rather than chain: inspect for cracks, missing teeth and stones, not slack from stretch.
- Aftermarket exhaust and tune combinations that change running behaviour and fuelling.
