Read before you start
- A warning light that comes on and flashes while riding, or any warning light with rough running, misfiring or loss of power, means stop riding and get the bike checked
- Self-diagnosis procedures vary by make, model and year — bridging the wrong pins on a diagnostic connector can damage the ECU. Follow the manual for your exact bike
- Never jump or probe the ECU connector itself with test leads unless the manual tells you to; back-probing with the wrong tool spreads pins and creates a new intermittent fault
- Some procedures involve starting the engine or switching the ignition on with the bike on a stand; keep it in neutral and the side stand position as the manual specifies
- Record every code before clearing — once cleared, the evidence for an intermittent fault is gone
- Disconnecting the battery is not a reliable way to clear codes on every bike, and it may reset other learned settings; use the manual's clearing procedure

Step-by-step
- Note exactly what the bike was doing when the light came on: cold or hot, at idle or under load, in the rain, after a wash
- Charge the battery and confirm it holds a healthy resting voltage — low voltage causes false codes
- Look up the self-diagnosis procedure for your exact make, model and year in the service manual
- Find the diagnostic connector or port if your bike has one — commonly under the seat or a side panel, often with a protective cap or a dummy plug
- Follow the manual's procedure: bridging the specified pins with a jumper, a switch or button sequence, or connecting an adapter and scanner that supports your bike
- If codes are shown as blinks of the FI light, video the dash with your phone so you can count long and short flashes accurately afterwards
- Write down every code in order, and note whether each is current or stored if the dash or scanner distinguishes them
- Look each code up in the manual's list and note which circuit it refers to
- Check the obvious shared causes first: battery terminals, the main ground strap, and any ground points listed for the engine management system
- Follow the loom from the ECU towards the named sensor or actuator, looking for chafing at the frame, headstock and engine, and for melted insulation near the exhaust
- Unplug the connector at the component. Look for green corrosion, water, bent or pushed-back pins and a broken locking tab
- Clean the connector with contact cleaner, let it dry, refit it until the lock clicks, and protect the seal with a little dielectric grease where appropriate
- Test the circuit with a multimeter to the manual's values — supply voltage, ground and signal or resistance — rather than assuming the part is bad
- Only once the wiring and connections test good, treat the component itself as the prime suspect
- Clear the codes using the manual's procedure, then ride or run the bike through the conditions that set the fault before
- Read the codes again. No return means the connection work fixed it; a returning code points back at the circuit or the part
- Remove the jumper or adapter, refit the connector cap or dummy plug so water stays out, and refit any panels
- If the fault is intermittent and you cannot pin it down, a dealer or specialist with the manufacturer's tool can often see live data and freeze-frame information that the dash cannot show
Common mistakes
- Buying the sensor the code names. A code tells you the ECU saw something wrong on that circuit — a signal out of range, missing or implausible. The sensor is one possibility; the connector, the wiring, the shared ground and the supply voltage are others, and they are far more often the cause on a bike that lives outdoors. Inspect and test the circuit before you order a part.
- Clearing the codes before writing them down. Once they are gone, so is the evidence — and an intermittent fault may not come back for weeks. Photograph or write down every code, in the order shown, and note whether each is current or stored, before you clear anything.
- Jumpering the diagnostic connector from a forum photo. Procedures differ between makes, models and even model years that look identical. Bridging the wrong pins can damage the ECU or its wiring. Use the pin identification and procedure in the service manual for your exact bike.
- Reading codes on a weak battery. Low system voltage during cranking or a tired battery can make the ECU log faults on circuits that are perfectly healthy. Charge the battery and confirm it holds a proper resting voltage before you take a pile of codes at face value.
Questions riders ask
How do I read fault codes on my motorcycle?
It depends entirely on the make, model and year. Many fuel-injected bikes can show stored codes on the dashboard — some after a diagnostic connector under the seat is bridged with a jumper, some through a sequence of the ignition, kill switch or dash buttons, and some display codes directly on an LCD. Some flash the FI light in long and short blinks that you count. Newer bikes may have a diagnostic socket for a scanner. The service manual for your bike has the exact procedure and the code list; a generic procedure from another model is not safe to assume.
Will a normal car OBD scanner work on a motorcycle?
Sometimes. Some newer bikes, particularly those built to recent emissions rules, have a diagnostic socket, and some of those work with a generic scanner through the right adapter cable. Many manufacturers use their own connector shape and communication protocol, and those need the dealer tool or an aftermarket interface built for that brand. Check what your specific bike uses before buying anything, and be wary of any adapter that claims to fit every motorcycle.
Can I keep riding with the FI light on?
Treat a warning light that comes on and flashes while you are riding, or any warning light that comes with rough running, misfiring, loss of power or stalling, as a stop-riding situation — pull over somewhere safe and do not carry on. Many bikes drop into a limp-home mode when they detect a fault, and an engine that is misfiring or running on substitute values can cut out in traffic. A light that is steady with the bike running perfectly still needs reading promptly, not ignoring for a season.

That confirms the fault is real and current. Go back to the circuit: unplug the connector at the sensor and look for corrosion, water, spread or pushed-back pins; check the wiring where it passes the frame, headstock and engine for chafing; check the ground points and battery terminals. Then test the circuit with a multimeter to the values in the service manual. Only once the wiring and connections test good is the part itself the prime suspect.
