How to find a motorcycle vacuum leak when the idle hunts, hangs high or the bike pops on the overrun. Step-by-step

  1. Confirm the pattern first: high or hunting idle, popping on a closed throttle, hesitation just off idle. Note whether it is worse cold or hot
  2. Rule out the simple things before chasing a leak — air filter condition, throttle cable free play, and a throttle that snaps fully shut at full lock both ways
  3. Remove the seat and lift or remove the tank for access, fitting a fuel line extension if the engine will need to run
  4. Find every intake boot between the throttle bodies or carbs and the cylinder head, and every vacuum hose, sync port and cap on that side of the throttle
  5. With the engine off, look at each boot for surface crazing, hardness and cracks, paying attention to the folds
  6. Flex each boot — bend it, squeeze it and look underneath with a torch and mirror. Cracks on the underside and in the folds only open when the rubber is bent
  7. Check the boot clamps are tight and sitting on the spigot, not over the end of it, and that each carb or throttle body is pushed fully home in its boot
  8. Check the boot-to-head joint: the mounting bolts should be tight and the O-ring or gasket, where fitted, should not be visible or extruded
  9. Squeeze every vacuum cap and hose on the intake side. Hard, split or loose caps are common and cheap — replace any that are suspect
  10. Check the sync port plugs or caps are all present and sealed, especially if the bike has been synced recently
  11. If nothing is visible, prepare the spray test: extinguisher in reach, no fuel leaks, pipes still cool or shielded, straw fitted to the can
  12. Start the engine and let it idle; note the rpm
  13. Give one short burst at a single joint and watch the tachometer. A change in idle — a rise, a stumble, or a brief smooth-out — means the spray was drawn in there
  14. Wait for the idle to return to normal before testing the next joint, and work systematically so drift from one joint does not fool you
  15. An unlit propane torch held beside each joint works the same way: the idle rises when gas is drawn into the leak. A smoke machine on a stationary engine shows the leak as a wisp of smoke with no fire risk
  16. Stop the engine and let it cool before you work on anything you found
  17. To replace a boot, drain the float bowls on carburettors, loosen the clamps and ease the carbs or throttle bodies back out of the boots
  18. Unbolt the boot from the head, clean the mating face without gouging it, and fit a new O-ring or gasket if the design uses one
  19. Fit the new boot the right way round — many are marked with a cylinder number or have an alignment tab — and torque the bolts evenly
  20. Soften stiff new boots in hot water if the carbs or throttle bodies are hard to refit; fit them dry rather than greasing the joint
  21. Push each carb or throttle body fully home, seat the clamps behind the bead on the spigot, and tighten to snug
  22. Refit every vacuum cap and hose, counting them back on
  23. Re-sync the throttle bodies or carbs with gauges on a fully warm engine
  24. Test ride: the idle should settle and the decel popping should drop. If it has not, look at the exhaust header joints and the air injection system next

What are the symptoms of a vacuum leak on a motorcycle?

A lean mixture in the leaking cylinder. Typically an idle that hangs high or hunts up and down, popping in the exhaust on a closed throttle, a hesitation or stumble just off idle, and sometimes a hotter-running cylinder. How obvious it is depends on the fuel system — a carburettor has no way to compensate, while an injected bike may partly correct for it and show mainly a raised, unsteady idle. The same symptoms also come from a stuck idle air control valve, an out-of-sync bank, or tight valves, so find the leak before you buy parts.

Which intake boots can actually cause a vacuum leak?

Only the ones downstream of the throttle plate — between the carburettor or throttle body and the cylinder head, plus any vacuum hose, sync port or cap tapped into that side. A split in the boot between the airbox and the carbs sits upstream of the throttle, so it does not cause a vacuum leak, but it does let unfiltered air and dirt straight into the engine, which is just as good a reason to replace it.

Is it safe to spray carb cleaner on a running engine?

It carries a real fire risk, which is why the method matters. Only ever do it with the engine idling and cold enough that the exhaust has not come up to temperature, or with the headers shielded; spray in short bursts through the straw at the joint you are testing; keep it well away from the exhaust, the ignition coils and plug leads; and have an extinguisher within arm's reach. An unlit propane torch fed near the joint does the same job with less liquid about, and a smoke machine on a stationary engine removes the fire risk entirely.

Could the popping on decel be something other than an intake leak?

Yes. An exhaust leak at the header flange lets air into the pipe on the overrun and produces the same popping. Many bikes also have an air injection (PAIR or secondary air) system that feeds air into the exhaust ports, and aftermarket exhausts or removed baffles make it worse. Check the header joints and the PAIR system before you decide it is the intake.
