What causes backfiring or popping?

Deceleration popping — usually normal

A light crackle on a closed throttle is common and usually harmless. Stock bikes run lean on the overrun to pass emissions, and air-injection (PAIR) systems pump fresh air into the exhaust, so a little unburnt fuel ignites in the pipe. A freer-flowing aftermarket exhaust makes it louder. If the bike otherwise runs perfectly, nothing is broken.

Safe to ride. No rush. If it bothers you, it is a tuning choice, not a repair. Typical cost: $0-40 DIY, $50-500 at a shop.

Exhaust leak at the header gasket or a joint

A leaking exhaust joint pulls fresh air into the pipe between pulses, so unburnt fuel ignites there — pops on the overrun and a tick that rises with revs. It can also throw off an O2 sensor reading on fuel-injected bikes.

Ride with caution. Fix it soon. A header leak burns away the gasket seat and can crack the head's exhaust studs if left for long. Typical cost: $10-60 DIY, $80-250 at a shop.

Running lean

Too much air for the fuel. A lean mixture burns slowly, so it is still burning when the exhaust valve opens. On carbs it can also light back through the intake. It shows as popping, a hunting idle, hesitation at small throttle openings, and heat. Lean is the one to take seriously: a significantly lean engine under load runs hot enough to damage pistons and valves.

Ride with caution. Keep it to gentle riding and do not hold it at high load until it is fixed. Sustained lean running is how engines overheat and burn pistons. Typical cost: $20-400 DIY, $100-700 at a shop.

Running rich

Too much fuel. Unburnt fuel reaches the hot exhaust and ignites there as loud bangs, often with black smoke, a sooty tailpipe, a fuel smell, and poor economy. Less dangerous to the engine than lean, but it fouls plugs, dilutes the oil, and can overheat a catalytic converter.

Ride with caution. Fix it soon. If fuel is dripping from the carbs or the oil smells of petrol, do not ride until you have fixed the float and changed the oil. Typical cost: $15-120 DIY, $90-400 at a shop.

Weak spark or ignition timing fault

If a cylinder misses, its unburnt charge goes into the hot exhaust and bangs when the next pulse lights it. A worn plug, a failing cap or coil, or a pickup-coil fault is the usual reason. On older bikes with points, the ignition timing can also drift; on modern electronic ignition it is fixed, and a timing fault means a failing sensor or ignition unit.

Ride with caution. Deal with it soon. Misfires can turn into cutting out, and unburnt fuel hammering the exhaust can damage a catalytic converter. Typical cost: $15-200 DIY, $100-450 at a shop.

Tight valve clearance — Advanced, do not ignore

Valves wear into their seats, so clearances usually get tighter over the miles. Once there is no clearance, the valve cannot close fully. Combustion leaks past it — back through the intake as spitting, or into the exhaust — and the valve cannot shed its heat into the head. Left alone, it burns, and a burnt valve means a top-end rebuild.

Do not ride. Park it until the clearances are checked. Every hot mile with a valve that cannot close cooks it a little more. Typical cost: $20-150 DIY, $250-900 at a shop.

Choke or enrichener stuck on

A choke that does not fully close keeps adding cold-start fuel to a warm engine. It runs rich and bangs through the exhaust, idles high, fouls plugs, and washes oil off the cylinder walls. Usually the cause is a sticky cable or a choke plunger that is not seating.

Ride with caution. Fix it soon. It will not break anything today, but prolonged rich running fouls plugs and thins the oil. Typical cost: $5-40 DIY, $60-200 at a shop.
